Cleanse and rejuvenate your whole being! At Madan Yoga, we offer 10-day private detox retreats in Pokhara, Nepal. In yoga, the shape of our digestive system is seen as a conch (Shankha) which has a long spiral tunnel-like intestine, and prakshalana in Sanskrit is called cleansing. Shankaprakshalana is the complete flushing of the gastrointestinal tract with salt water, which is passed through the digestive tract by means of certain exercises and movements (a series of 5 postures). It includes Tadasana, Tiryakatadasana, Katichakrasana, Bhujangasana, and finally Udarakarshan. Each asana must be performed eight times in order to complete one round.
By practicing these asanas whilst drinking the water, all toxins of the body are released from the intestines. In fact, this detox retreat Shankhaprakshalana is the natural way of cleansing, it rejuvenates not only the body, but also the mind - Perhaps the most powerful cleansing exercise of all. It brings vitality, flexibility, as well as inner clarity. It purifies the blood, cures digestive disorders such as indigestion, constipation, enhances metabolism, can help with allergies, skin issues, and more.
After the evacuation of clear water only, the intestine is cleaned and it is time to stop the practice and relax in Shavasana. The following days, it is necessary to keep eating light food, such as khichdi (also known as the "ayurvedic superfood"). Soon after, boiled vegetables and simple soups can be incorporated. In the days following the cleanse, regular (ideal: 2x/day) asana practice is seen as another important part of the detox programme. You will feel how your body feels lighter, refreshed, more energetic and more flexible.
